While in Cambodia we were fortunate to encounter some mesmerizing and inspiring music. Some of the temples of Angkor have “resident” bands that play traditional Khmer music. Many of the musicians are victims of the violence of landmines, having been crippled, maimed, or blinded. Young children also participate in the music-making. The bands use donations and proceeds from CD sales to support themselves and others who have been victimized by the weapons of war.
We were deeply moved by their playing and by their dedication to using music as an instrument of healing. We purchased CDs from all four different bands we came upon. The music is a treasure. |
